directions

  • Pour kernels into a small paper bag (standard lunch size is fine) and fold the top of the bag over twice to close (each fold should be 1/2 inch deep; remember the kernals need room to pop).
  • Seal the bag with 2 staples placed 2 to 3 inches apart. (Editor's Note: Using metal staples in a microwave can be hazardous, please consider an alternate method).
  • Place bag in microwave on carousel. Cook on high 2-3 minutes, or until the pops are 5 seconds apart. Pour in melted butter and salt and shake the bag to distribute.

  1. Yay! This worked great! I wish I had known about this recipe years, well decades ago.I used tape and it was done in 2.5 mins. Thanks so much!

  2. What a snap! I did the butter spray and salt. Used Scotch tape to seal...no problem.Could re-use the bag.

  3. Thanks so much for a great recipe, Lisa! I used a chip clip (all plastic, no metal) instead of staples, cause I was paranoid about metal in my microwave and it worked just fine. I also used spray butter on my popcorn instead of melted butter because it has 0 calories. I will be using this often! Thanks again for posting!

  4. Ah this was cool. I just folded the paper bag since I don't have a turntable in my microwave so I wasn't sure how safe staples would be if they were stationary. I had a few unpopped kernels but I also erred on the side of taking the popcorn out early . I used only 1 tbsp of butter. The flavor was between plain air-popped popcorn (which is too bland for me) and microwave popcorn (which has too much "flavor" for me). In other words, I really enjoyed it. I think with a little experience this will be an easy method.

  5. WOW! Just tried this and it worked perfectly and was so fast and easy! Mine was done in 2 minutes. I was going to go and buy a popcorn maker but now I don't have to. Thanks for sharing this.

Tweaks

  1. Oh my gosh, it worked. We added a little olive oil instead of the butter and used one staple. We used the popcorn setting on the microwave. It came out perfectly. The only thing I would do differently next time is to put the bag on a plate--it was extremely greasy, and made a mess of the microwave turn table. I don't think I will ever buy commercial microwave popcorn again!

  2. Mmmm it’s yummy

  3. I do this at work literally every day now! I use Becel spray as a topping instead of melted butter. The first time I showed some co-wrokers what I was doing they couldn't believe it. Now everyone is doing it!Thanks for this great, easy recipe!!
