These Homemade Pierogi are pan fried and served with sautéed cabbage, onion, and apples. It’s the most delicious thing! Make the Pierogi in advance or buy them and this meal comes together in only 20 minutes!

Pierogi Recipe with Cabbage and Apples (1)

You know what cooking with your kids does? Makes you lose your patience and pull your hair out. Oh no, wait. LOL. The other thing >> It fills them with fond childhood memories. I have so many.

Like when my mom and Nan would spend all day making Chinese short ribs, or my Papa would get up at the crack of dawn to peel a gazillion onions for onions and eggs, or watching my mom make chopped chicken liver (which is amazing, and cannot be beat by anyone else including all the Jewish deli’s around the world. I swear!)

What’s even better for me is watching my mom cook with her grandchildren. The look on their faces when they get to crack eggs, when they get to mix flour, or when they get to smush hamburger meat with their bare hands! It’s so exciting. And I see their joy, as I once experienced it.

My mom used to make homemade Pierogi, potstickers, and egg rolls when I was growing up. It pretty much took all day and was like an event! I used to watch her prepare the filling, but then she’d set it up like an assembly line, and I was a proud assembler.

I make dumplings from scratch occasionally and now my kids help me. Sometimes I just sit and watch them; transports me back 30 years.

Never had Pierogi? It’s a stuffed dough dumpling. Pillows of deliciousness. You can make them sweet or savory – the most common (American) way is with potatoes and cheese. This is my homemade Pierogi recipe.

Pierogi pair so well with cabbage, apples, and sour cream, so that’s how I frequently serve them for dinner.

My whole family loves this pierogi recipe so much. And every time I make it, my daughter (who is much older now) always says, “Remember when I used to spend an hour peeling the potatoes and apples? That was fun.” See, fond childhood memories…

Notes

The little bit of sugar gives a balance of flavor with the vinegar, but you can simply omit it, if you prefer.
